More Plasti Dipping on my 300zx/Z32

As I wrote earlier, I plasti dipped my 300zx, or at least parts of it.

I got some more time and decided to finish “de-chroming” the parts that I wanted to turn black.

The window trim on the 300zx came black from the factory.  However, due to time, the original black coating gets ugly and worn.  It looked like the OP had decided to remove what was left of it and leave the trim chrome.  Here are a few pics of what I’m referring to –

As you can see I had already started masking before I thought to take a “before” pic… but this gets the point across.

Another place that was really showing age was the center bar on the T-top.  The black coating had cracked and was looking real bad.  Again, I forgot to snap some “before” shots, but here is another car with the same problem I found on the web –

For this, I just ripped off the peeling black plastic.  Both ends also had a rubber part filing a gap that I cut off with an exacto knife.  Here is what it looked like before plasti dipping it –

Here is a pic of my 300zx all masked up and ready to plasti dip.

As before, I sprayed on 7 coats of plasti dip.  The first two coats were light, but after those I started putting it on a bit heaver.  Here are a few more in process pics.

After 7 coats I let it dry for 1 hour and then removed all the masking.  Again, I’m just so amazed how well this comes out.  I’ve got “ok” painting technique, but this plasti dip stuff just is so forgiving.

One problem I did have, which had nothing to do with the plasti dip, was that I tried to save a couple bucks and got some “cheap” masking tape rather than the much more expensive Scotch Blue masking tape.  The cheap tape left little bits of glue all over that I’m going to have to try and get off once the plasti dip has had  a little more time to cure.

Here are a few pics of the finished job.
