Replacing the Catalytic Converters on my Z32/300zx

My 300zx has had a bad exhaust smell since I bought her.  I can’t believe I didn’t notice when I bought her.  I have the Z running pretty good (not rich/not lean), and have replaced the O2 sensors.  So pretty much the last possibility is that the 23+ year old catalysts have gone bad.  Since I bought this car from a younger kid who had put on a cat-back exhaust, I wouldn’t be surprised if the cats haven’t been gutted.

So I’ve decided to bite the bullet and replace the catalysts.

You can buy “universal catalytic converters” on Ebay for around $60.  For the 300zx, these would need to be wielded in.  Calling a few muffler shops, I got estimates ranging from $150 to $250 to wield the universal cats in.  Since the Z32 has two cats, the total cost would be around $320 to $420 to replace the cats with the universal cats.

Direct Bolt-on Replacement Catalytic Converter for Z32/300zx

Rockauto also carries direct bolt on replacement catalytic converters for the 300zx.  I can install these myself so the only costs would be part costs which were around $175 per cat.  I was able to find a 5% coupon by googling which basically payed the shipping cost.  So for about $350 I will have not only new cats but new downpipes too.  This is the route I’ve decided to go.
